Our Town

  • Colonial Beach, officially incorporated as a town on February 25, 1892, quickly rose in popularity due to the allure of its beaches and waterfront properties. This led to a boom in the construction of Victorian homes, summer cottages, and hotels, with the Bell House on Irving Avenue standing out as a particularly notable example.

The Decline and Rejuvenation

The popularity of Colonial Beach was significantly influenced by changes in transportation methods and gambling laws. The advent of automobile travel shifted vacation patterns from extended stays to shorter, more frequent trips, impacting hotel occupancy. Additionally, the casinos, which once thrived here, were destroyed by a fire in the 1960s.
However, recent years have seen a rejuvenation of Colonial Beach, spurred by its proximity to the expanding Washington Metropolitan Area, once again making it a sought-after destination for leisure and relaxation.

Historical and Natural Attractions
Situated about 65 miles from the vital urban centers of Richmond, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., the town serves as the gateway to Route 3, the "Historic Corridor." This area boasts attractions like Stratford Hall, George Washington's Birthplace, Westmoreland State Park, Ingleside Winery, Westmoreland Berry Farm, and the historic town of Fredericksburg, blending rich history with natural beauty.

A Golf Cart Community
Colonial Beach is proud to be Virginia's first recognized golf cart community. The town comes alive with custom-decorated golf carts, especially during summer and the annual Halloween parade, reflecting the community's creative spirit.

One of Colonial Beach's most enchanting features is the spectacular sunsets over Monroe Bay. Each evening brings a new color palette, inviting residents and visitors alike to pause and soak in the natural beauty from the BAYSIDE’s deck.
